Modern biotechnology has improved farming techniques around the world by increasing plants’ resistance to diseases, reducing pesticide applications, and maintaining and improving crop yields. As biology science graduate Alex Oppenheim Omaha explains, farmers worldwide have been using biotechnology at rates never before seen by any other advances in the history of agriculture. Since biotechnology delivers significant and tangible benefits, the adoption rates have been quite impressive. In the past two decades we have seen some revolutionary biotech innovations that have helped farmers farm more sustainably, improve their harvests, and give the world a more nutritious diet. These things have truly revolutionized agriculture.
Today agricultural biotechnology is a safe and beneficial technology that contributes to both environmental and economic sustainability. In the period from 1996 to 2007, U.S. farm income benefits were estimated at around $20 billion, as the result from agricultural biotechnology enhanced productivity and efficiency. Although modern biotechnology has the efficiency and precision to modify crops in a variety of useful ways, still according to Alex Oppenheim Omaha, we’ve only scratched the surface with its potential. In fact, none of the past accomplishments can compare with will be like in 30 years. We need to help plants adapt to climate change by combating diseases and allowing for better nutrient and fertilizer uptake, and in order to realize the potential of science, a new generation of plant breeders must be inspired into the industry.
Like all other industries, the agricultural biotechnology industry will also have to adapt to changes and future trends, Alex Oppenheim Omaha says. For now, the U.S. has a solid platform for supporting this industry changes, but in order to continue so, we must bring all specialties together and use our knowledge wisely. Food production is crucial for humankind which is why every country needs to inspire its young generations to go into this field.
